I am closer to the figure of an artisan than an artist, a nineteenth-century ethnographer than a researcher, rewritten however through a contemporary critical sensibility: someone who browses archives, gathers materials and affects and brings them into the fold of contemporary meanings. I am interested in social contexts. Even when political rebellion is losing ground, I believe artists should irritate the social body, unsettle the public, reveal what has been repressed: fears and traumas, desires and wants. I am interested in transforming existing representations from within, through thinking that burrows from below and spreads like a rhizome, and which becomes a form of emancipation. In this sense my projects are like islands: autonomous creations that exist for their own sake while forming archipelagos and multi-tiered constellations. They represent a complete narrative whose meanings never stop emerging from intertwined layers. Their structure resembles at times a Baroque patchwork, at times a Chinese box. The Deleuzian notion of rhizome speaks to me. I focus on the transformation of static relations into performative action, but what I find most interesting is everything that happens in between.
I was born in 1987. I come from Jarosław, Poland, but I live and work in Portugal. I work at the intersection of many media: performance, video and installation. I am drawn to the crossing of materials and aesthetics rather than loyalty to any single one. I find it more inspiring to borrow and adapt diverse cultural codes. I like to tell stories, but what captures my imagination more than the story itself is how it is constructed: its invisible joints, cracks, gaps and folds, which build a multilayered whole that is never fully closed. My practice treads the line between the core and the periphery, between objects and their performativity, between voyeurism and subjects that emerge in motion.
